Susan G Komen Global Race for the Cure, National Mall

This weekend I participated in the Susan G Komen Global Race for the Cure on the National Mall in Washington, DC.  This was my first time participating in the walk.  I did it to support my good girlfriend Kellie Jordan-Walls, who is fighting breast cancer.  She is a survivor!

The walk was life-changing for me.  It was very emotional.  I will be participating every year!

Special thanks to Keisha D. Hooks, Photographer, for the photo of Mrs. Kellie Jordan-Walls, Breast Cancer Survivor!

Symbol of Hope

This weekend, tomorrow to be exact, I will be participating in the 2010 Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure.  I am participating to support my very good friend Kellie Walls of Temple Hills, Maryland.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year, but thank God, she is receiving the necessary treatment and on the way to being cancer free!  She is indeed fighting like a girl!

I registered yesterday.  You can still register today up until 6:00pm at the Hyatt Regency on New Jersey Avenue in Washington, DC.  The registration fee is $40.00 and of course the proceeds go to finding a cure for breast cancer.

GO REGISTER!  It will give you an opportunity to get some exercise in and support a GREAT cause this weekend.

Kellie, thank you for being an inspiration to all!  I shall see you tomorrow.  I’ll be in all pink!

Introducing a New Mobile Spa Company in the DC Metro Area

0 Comments 28 May 2010

CEO of Elevar

Elevar isn’t really a new company.  The company has actually been around for some time now; however, they now have a website!  The site is fresh, modern and exciting – just like the spa services offered by Danielle Strong Gibbs, affectionately known as Dani, CEO and Owner of Elevar.  I really like it!  Please go to the website and check her out.  You will be happy you did!

The following is Dani’s bio.

A dynamic new face on the skincare scene Dani began her journey in 2007 and quickly embraced the needed professional skills to become a leader in the industry. As a student at the Aveda Institute in Washington, DC she underwent intense training for her esthetician license but did not settle there. While continuing in her full time position (at The Art Institute of Washington), Dani juggled work, class and extra studies that would further enhance her knowledge and make her a marketable brand. Dani underwent advanced makeup training with known professionals, Roque Cozette, Kym Lee, Danessa Myricks and facial threading techniques with James Wealthy. Immediately after Aveda Institute she began working at Azure Aveda Salon & Spa in Alexandria, VA and doing freelance makeup artistry for recognized Andre Chreky Salon & Spa in Washington, DC. She continues to educate herself on new trends in the industry by attending various events and seminars.

Dani has established web presence as a skin care consultant for Healthytextures.com and practices the art of giving back as a substitute educator in the Esthetician Program at the Aveda Institute. With all of this under her belt Dani’s own business, ELEVAR continues to grow. Ten plus years of customer service experience, management and proficiency in retail sales has helped Dani hone the direction of ELEVAR. Her professional services vary from facials, peels, aromatherapy, back and eye treatments, reflexology, body waxing, facial threading, and Egyptian body wraps to makeup applications for events and photos. Her makeup work has been seen in the High Teas Society Annual Capital Catwalk and the VIP Exclusives Fashion Show among others. One of Dani’s most recent high profile work was done for People Magazine as a makeup artist for the 2009 White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

As a flourishing entrepreneur, Dani Gibbs is ready to share the knowledge of healthy skin with all women for years to come. Dani believes that, “beauty definitely starts from within, but we all need a little help along the way.”

Pampering Junkies Boudoir Shootout

0 Comments 28 May 2010

Stephanie McKenzie Davis, CEO, is hosting a Boudoir Shootout in Wheaton, Maryland this weekend.  Pampering Junkies is a local full service mobile spa and event planning company located in the DC Metro Area.  The event begins at 10am at 11101 Georgia Avenue, Wheaton, Maryland (i.e., The Penthouse @ The Archstone).  For Appointments, call Stephanie at 301-806-0387 or email her at smckenziedavis@verizon.net

The following is Stephanie McKenzie’s bio.  Upon completion of a long (but worth it) stint at both North Carolina Central and Bowie State Universities, where she earned both a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Sociology and a Master’s of Science degree in Human Resource Development, she decided that it was time to do something that she enjoyed and enabled her innate creative abilities to shine.  Needless to say, she decided that she wanted to embark upon a career as a Make-Up Artist. Stephanie completed the Make-Up Artistry licensure course at the Bennett Career Institute in Washington, D.C, where she was under the tutelage of the “GREAT” Derrick Rutledge.  She has since become licensed in the State of Maryland and is constantly refining her knowledge and skills by taking classes with the best in the industry.  Stephanie feels extremely blessed to experience this roller coaster ride of Make-Up Artistry and she loves every minute of it.

Recently she completed a lash application course.  She’s currently accepting appointments for lash applications now!  If you would like more information about Pampering Junkies, or her lash application techniques, visit the website at www.pamperingjunkies.com

See you at the event!

Janet Jackson, Always on Point!

The First Lady of entertainment, Ms. Janet Jackson, can do no wrong.  Make no mistake about it, even at age 44; she can still turn heads with her ever changing hairstyles.   I love this short style on her.

Pretty Young Killers: Charged as Adults

1 Comment 27 May 2010

Pretty Killers

I came across this story online.  I could not believe what I was reading when I read it.

Here’s the scoop.

The mother, Jarmecca “Nikki” Whitehead, of the two girls, twins Jas and Tas, was murdered back in January of this year.  Her murder went unsolved for close to 6 months.  Her picture is shown at the end of this article.  According to the article, the twins were troubled teenagers.

Apparently, after an altercation some time ago, the mother sent the twins to live with their great-grandmother.  By all accounts, according to the story, she could no longer handle the rambunctious teens.

While the teens lived with the great-grandmother they were unruly and defiant.   So much so…that the great grandmother was forced to place a deadbolt on her bedroom door to prevent the twins from stealing her items (e.g., money).

Well, on Friday, the authorities in Conyers, Georgia solved the mystery murder.  They charged the twins with the murder of their own mother.   They will be tried as adults (as they should).

It’s a sad day when anyone loses their life, no doubt.  However, it is really disturbing to see daughters kill their mother.  I have been saying this for years: females have become more and more aggressive over the years.  I wish someone would shed some light on why females, especially young girls, have this level of aggression typically fond in males.

Check out the link to the Atlanta Journal-Consstitution for the complete story.

Veteran DC Stylist Re-emerges in the New Arts District

0 Comments 19 May 2010

Last month, veteran DC stylist, Yvette Thompkins, set up shop in a swanky new hair salon in the new Arts District located in Hyattsville, Maryland.  The new Arts District includes several small businesses, a gym (the old Lustine’s car dealership), live-work homes and more.  We visited the new salon, 56 Twelve Hair Gallery, to take a tour and speak with her about her style, her favorite products, hand-crafted soap, art, health and more.

Who is Yvette Thompkins?  Yvette is a native Washingtonian who began her career as a professional hair stylist in some DC’s best hair salons.   Her hair clients include men, women and children of all ethnicities. She expressed that she is really in to helping her clients maintain healthy hair.  Over the years, she has expanded her styling interests to include art, home interior design and healthy eating and culinary.  In expanding her career as a stylist, Yvette created Art Is.  I asked what Art Is is all about she replied that “art is hair and beauty, home interior design and healthy eating and culinary.  She finished with “Art is everything!”

As mentioned above, 56Twelve Hair Gallery, sits in the new EYA development.  The address is 5612 Baltimore Avenue, Hyattsville Maryland 20781.  It is conveniently located near the West Hyattsville, College Park and Prince Georges Metro Stations.  56Twelve has an art inspired decorum and the atmosphere is very inviting.  While looking around the salon, I saw that there were more than just hair products for sale.  The salon also carries items for the body and beautiful art work.  While the salon has many kinds of products to accommodate clients with all hair types, Yvette expressed that she really likes Jane Carter and Carol’s Daughter.

At the end of our chat, I had an opportunity to take a couple of photos of the salon.  They are posted.  I also had an opportunity to ask Yvette one more question, which was what information she wanted people to know most about her business and new location?  She said she wanted people to know that “56Twelve is a salon where everyone is welcome,” and that she is a firm believer in the three Ps: “being pleasant, polite and professional.”

Personally, I found the salon to be very warm and inviting.
